Welcome to the Tudor Cottage Alpacas website. My life with alpacas came about after I lost my husband and needed a new start for myself and my children. I needed a new challenge that I could focus on and that would allow us all to enjoy a different lifestyle to the one we had previously had. Having grown up with a very rural life and always having had animals about, it followed that animals would be involved. As a primary school teacher I was also interested in something that might, at some point, lend itself to an educational aspect. In time I discovered these delightful animals and some truly enthusiastic breeders who made me very welcome and helped me decide these furry creatures were just what I needed.

Naturally, the next area to think about was 'what was to be done with the fleece?' and further research into mini-mills, the fleece and textile trades, spinning, weaving etc. I soon realised that the alpacas could provide exactly the kind of focus and interest which I could turn into a worthwhile and enjoyable way of life. This is axactly what they have done.

I have now established my own breeding group seen my own home born crias entering our lives. I have one of, probably relatively few 4 year olds in the UK, who has grown up with alpacas and accepts them as a normal part of everyday life! Although they are by nature prey animals I have found them to be rather inquisitive, amusing animals with a strangely calming presence and a quiet reassuring hum. It is easy to have a great deal of time simply vanish while you watch them!

2010 has seen the Tudor Cottage Alpacas herd moving house and learning what cows are as we have moved part way across Devon to join my new partner on his dairy farm. The alpacas are enjoying the variety of the farm and the paddocks and orchards of some neighbouring friends where the holiday let guests can also enjoy their company. Life with alpacas is good!
